Police to Participate in Lockdown Drill at Mira Costa

The Manhattan Beach Police Department is helping school and district personnel to ensure student safety.

To enhance school safety, the Manhattan Beach Police Department will participate in a school lockdown drill at Mira Costa High School this week. MCHS is located in Manhattan Beach. Hermosa Beach residents are eligible to attend the public high school.

MBPD officers will work with Mira Costa personnel to secure the campus and will work with school district staff to assess the lockdown procedure, said Ellyn Schneider, executive director of student services for the Manhattan Beach Unified School District.

Students and staff on the MCHS campus drill 2 times annually on the lockdown process, she said. This week's drill will last about an hour.

The lockdown drill partnership is an effort to enhance communication between MBUSD and MBPD to establish model student safety procedures.

MBPD and MBUSD will review the drill and safety protocols to "provide the most secure learning environment possible for students," said Schneider.
