Preparing Hermosa Students for High School

Parent orientation nights are set for both Mira Costa and Redondo Union high schools.

Orientations begin this week for parents of Hermosa Beach students who enter high school in the fall.

Since the Hermosa Beach City School District does not include a high school, local students have the option of attending one of two public high schools in the area: Mira Costa or Redondo Union.

An orientation night for parents of students planning to attend is set for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the school's auditorium.

We know it's early, but as students get closer to the new school year, here are some tips for parents from Education.com to help ease that transition from middle school to high school:

  • Attend orientation, and not just you, but your child also. It will help get a feel for the new school.
  • Get set with supplies. Find out if a supply list is available before school starts, if possible.
  • Get organized and teach time management. Encourage your child to keep a planner or calendar now to keep track of school activities.
  • Help your child make a list of questions he or she has about high school. Then, work together to find the answers.
  • High school students have a lot more independence than they did in elementary and middle school. Discuss the safety issues, expectations, and responsibilities that come with this newfound freedom.
