RUHS Hosts All Awards Night

The four runners who have set the state record in the 4x1,600 relay were among honored.

A video production of the fantastic running foursome of Redondo Union High School — Rachel Bush, Chloe Curtis, Lindsey Mull and Laura O'Neill — was the highlight of the Redondo Union High School's All Awards Night, held Monday at the school auditorium.

During the night honoring mostly academic achievements, athletics snuck-in and stole the show.

Set to serious music, the event, sponsored by Nike, featured plenty of high quality, slow-motion video and up-close shots of the four runners training. The four have together set the California state record in the 4x1600 relay, and the video tribute special-presentation served as a great treat.

"It's outside the regular events they run during the track season, " said said RUHS Principal Mary Little. "Now we have state record holders at the high school."

Team runner Laura O'Neill felt it was great teamwork that set their record.

"It was a combination of us working together — we're all really strong and we practice together everyday, we all put our effort into it," O'Neill said.

"It takes a lot of hard work, we practice six days a week, we all practice together, we all do the same workouts, we eat right, sleep and stuff — you got to get all of that outside stuff in with the running."

Insofar as working with Nike as a high school student, what did she think?

"I think it's surreal," O'Neill said, "it's really an honor."

The night was about everyone, however, and the short special presentation wasn't all there was, nor the whole point of the night — the bulk of the honorees were chosen for academic achievements.

"I just think it's nice to honor our students and all of their hard work and effort," said Amy Golden, RUHS assistant principal.
