The children gathered around MRFy (pronounced Murphy), a robot brought along by Consolodated Disposal to last week's Hermosa Beach City Council meeting to help honor the 11 winning students for their anti-litter posters.
Over 350 students from Hermosa View and Hermosa Valley schools had submitted entries, with the winners being pulled from each grade, from kindergarten through eighth.
Mayor Jeff Duclos pointed out that businesses along Pier Avenue have agreed to display the artwork in their windows.
"We'd like to honor them tonight," he said about the winning entries.
The competition was sponsored by education group Grades to Green and Consolidated Disposal (a subsidiary of Republic Services) as part of Earth Month.
"We just kinda got an idea about it," said Sofia Ingloi, age 8, who worked with her fellow second grader Penny Robins, age 7.
"We decided to do it because we don't like trash on the ground," Robins added.
In addition to being entertained by MRFy (Material Recovery Facility), the winning children received certificates for their work.
In addition to Robins and Ingloi, winners were Gracie Fojut, Reese Riley, Evelyn Sheppird, Belah Hruska, Kalea Lum, Genevieve Beimforde, Emma Padgett, Malia Kiger and Katelin Subbie.
