Students Named National Merit Semifinalists

Five Mira Costa students, two Redondo Union students among National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.

Five Mira Costa High School and two Redondo Union High School students have been named semifinalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Mira Costa students Margaret Ginoza, Vincent Liu, Vivian Morgowicz, Joshua Shu, and Richard Wedeen were among the semifinalists, according to the school.

And Redondo Union High School seniors Charlotte Kim and Dylan Scarcliff were on the semifinalists list, which was released Wednesday.

The students are among about 16,000 semifinalists nationwide.

The semifinalists will continue in the competition for about 8,300 National Merit scholarships worth more than $34 million that will be offered next spring.

About 1.5 million juniors attending about 22,000 high schools entered the National Merit program by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents fewer than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, included the highest-scoring National Merit entrants in each state.
