Big Halibut Bite Along Coast

Anglers in Hermosa Beach continue to see occasional big halibut as well as white sea bass.

The squid grounds in Hermosa Beach continue to produce occasional big halibut this summer as well as some big white sea bass for local anglers—and as a full moon approaches Friday, the bite could well accelerate as tidal flows are normally at their apex.

During the high tides, anglers see some of the best white sea bass fishing in the area.

For example, while on board the Highliner this week, Justin Horwath (who’s just getting into fishing) caught a 28-pound white sea bass off the Hermosa Beach shore.

Not to be out done, Horwath’s friend Danny O’Connor caught his biggest halibut yet: a 32-pound flattie.

Mike Plossel of Laguna Niguel caught a giant, bright-colored Opah on the Searcher out of Fisherman’s landing in San Diego. Opahs rarely are caught by recreational anglers and remain an enigma.

Local fisherman Dave Albury caught a 1,119-pound blue marlin this month in the Bahamas, shattering a 32-year Bahamas Billfish Championship series tournament record and setting a new record.

The feat also places Albury in the elite club of fishermen who’ve landed a "grander," which is a marlin weighing 1,000 pounds or more.
