Boardriders Club Looks for Winter's Biggest Wave

The South Bay group is accepting entries for this year's Big Wave Challenge.

Wave riding in Hermosa Beach is no longer just about solo ocean ventures—now it's about community and camaraderie, thanks to the South Bay Boardriders Club.

The group of wave riders have been hosting functions and contests here in the Beach Cities for just more than a year. Hermosa resident and photographer Mike Balzer founded the club during a meeting with friends at in October 2009.

The local organization has grown since then to host surf contests and share the history of the water sport with younger generations. The group's newest community venture is the first annual Big Wave Challenge (see accompanying photo under video).

The contest will honor an athlete who is documented on video or in a photo paddling into the biggest South Bay wave out of all contestants. An awards dinner for the winner will be held in April, and prizes include $1,000 and a Body Glove wetsuit.

To enter the challenge, a photo or video of someone riding the big wave can be mailed to 2629 Manhattan Ave., PMB 17, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254. The deadline for entries is March 31.
