Four Mira Costa Golfers Advance to CIF

Kyle Nakazaki takes Bay League in playoff with Ryann Ree; David Kim and William Chryar are third and fourth in two-day tournament.

Things could not have gone much better for the Mira Costa High golf team Thursday, as all four players who made it from Monday's Bay League qualifier advanced to CIF.

Mustang senior Kyle Nakazaki struggled early on the Wilson Course at Griffith Park as he opened with a 2-over par 39 on the front nine. Nakazaki bogeyed the 10th hole, as well, but then caught fire with five birdies in six holes en route to a 3-under 32. His streak began with a putt from off the fringe on 11; he would then birdie holes 12, 14, 15 and 16.

"I was not putting well at all on the front and then I got one to go in on 11 and that kind of got me started," Nakazaki said. "I had a lot of chances from six to eight feet, so that made it easy to make a comeback."

Nakazaki's 1-under 71 gave him a two-day total of even par (144), tying him with teammate Ryann Ree who had a reverse of Nakazaki's effort with a 73 after posting 71 on Monday. Nakazaki won in a playoff over Ree to claim the top spot.

Ree made the turn at 38 and closed with even-par 35 for his round of 73. He birdied holes 4, 13 and 16 on the day. Ree was playing with teammate William Chryar and was tied going into the final hole, making par while Chryar bogeyed.

"It was fun to play with William, it's better when you're competing with your own guy for the lead," Ree said.

Chryar made birdies on hole 1, 5, 6 and 9 on his way to a 1-under 36 on the front nine, he shot 37 on the back to finish at 73 and a two-day total of 145.

"Coming into this week I was just not playing well, I was shooting in the high 70s and low 80s, but I'm driving the ball better and I'm just going to keep working to finish the season strong," Chryar said.

Bay League Player of the Year David Kim followed up Monday's 72, with a 73 as he chipped in on the second hole and had a consistent round with only two bogeys on the card and joining Chryar at 145 for the tournament. Kim finished third as a result of a tiebreaker, with Chryar fourth and South Torrance's Kevin Kim earning the final a bid to CIF with a fifth place finish at 147.

"I hit the ball well; I wasn't really making a lot of putts, but it was a good two days overall," Kim said.

Coach Bob Timberlake was pleased with the effort of his talented Mustangs team.

"Everyone has stayed solid, nobody is really up and down, and that's what it's all about," Timberlake said. "Kyle had a great final nine and William put another solid round together, I'm really happy with where we're at."

Mira Costa will head to Lakewood on Monday as they take part in the CIF Divisional Team Tournament where the Mustangs will send six players, using the best five for the team score. Lawrence Ree and Michael D'Angelo will join Chryar, Nakazaki, Kim and Ryann Ree.
