Manhattan Beach Open Plays on Post-AVP

After the collapse of the AVP just days before the event, the city of Manhattan Beach forged ahead with a smaller, more traditional tournament.

In the wake of the Association of Volleyball Professionals' cancellation of the remainder of its tour, the City of Manhattan Beach scrambled to pull together last-minute resources to put on the 50th Manhattan Beach Open.

With the AVP's pull-out, much of the spectacle was removed as well. Gone were the grandstands, the giant inflatable marketing devices and brash event sponsors.

What remained was the difficult parking, the hardcore volleyball enthusiasts, and the honor of getting one's name placed with the other 49 years' worth of winners.
