Mira Costa Victorious in Dual Track Meet

Hurdlers shine as Mustangs run away from Peninsula.

Michael Koger dominated the hurdles, winning easily in both the 110-meter and 300-meter races in 14.8 and 39.5 seconds, and also captured a victory in the 200 meters to lead Mira Costa to a 100-36 victory over Peninsula in a Bay League dual meet.

"I was reasonably pleased with today's results," Mustangs' coach Steve Singiser said.  "We did well, but it was tough as we had some guys get nicked up out there and we're not sure the extent of the injuries yet. But the season only gets tougher so we want to have everyone available.

"Michael Koger won impressively, I'm really happy with how he ran, He's capable of good things in the hurdles.''

On a blustery day, the wind was the main source of resistance for Mira Costa, which won 13 of the 16 events. Sophomore Adam Perez claimed a win in the two-mile and finished second behind teammate Brett Douville in the mile. Douville, a junior, also won the 800 meters.

"It was surprisingly really windy out there, definitely a challenge," Perez said.  "We have been hitting our marks lately and running really well, I felt good out there and we have a big meet coming up next week so I'm excited for that."

Douville, a junior, also won the 800 meters for Mira Costa. Matson, a senior, won the triple jump and finished second in the high jump.

"It was good to see Jon Matson jump well, he has been hurt for a while and we have not had a meet in three weeks so for him to come back and get a win is great," Singiser said.

On the girls' side, the Mustangs used strength in numbers in claiming an 81-49 victory.  Peninsula won eight of the fifteen events, but Mira Costa collected enough second and third place finishes to win by a comfortable margin.

"We had a couple big, timely performances," Singiser said.  "We have talent and they did what they were supposed to do - 81-49 is pretty decisive and we performed the way we should for the most part."

The Mustangs swept both hurdle events with Lauren Welbaum leading the way, winning the 110 and 300 meter events.

Savannah Pio, a junior, picked up wins in the 800 and 1600 meter events as the other multiple winner on the girls side. Senior Claire Voepel earned points for Mira Costa in the jumping events with a second place in the long jump and a third place in the triple jump.

"Claire has been sick and today was a really tough competition with Peninsula's excellent jumpers. She held her own, I was proud of her effort," Singiser said.

Up next for the Mustangs is a highly anticipated dual meet with Redondo Union on April 21, with both schools coming into the meet at Mira Costa undefeated.

"Dual meets are all about capitalizing on what you do well and minimizing the damage in the events that are not your strengths," Singiser said.  ''There are 16 events and you can't take any off.  If you do, you can lose nine points immediately and you can't afford that."

"Our boys got beat by Redondo last year and I know they are hungry. They need to be ready because it's going to be stiff competition out there, but they know that."
