It was Redondo versus Hermosa in the race for the annual Hennessey's United States SUP and Paddleboard Championships title Saturday.

But Redondo prevailed as Redondo Beach resident Dr. Brad Thomas, 43, an orthopedic surgeon, won the men's unlimited paddleboard division, completing the 8.5-mile open-ocean race in 1:23:48.

Hermosa Beach resident Adam Buckley, 33, came in second with a time of 1:25:11.

San Clemente resident Thomas "Maximus" Shahinian, 42, took home first prize in the men's unlimited stand-up paddleboard (SUP) division with a time of 1:25:22. Tyler Morgan of Redondo Beach finished second with a time of 1:26:31.

Hawaii resident Candice Appleby won the women's unlimited SUP division with a time of 1:39:51. Brandi Baksic of Torrance came in second with a time of 1:40:46, and Rachel Bruntsch took third with a time of 1:42:54.

More than 200 elites competed in the title event, according to organizer Tim Ritter.

The turnout was "awesome," Ritter said.

Paul Hennessey, the owner of Hennessey's Taverns and one of the founders of the race, said the first race 16 years ago featured about 30 prone paddlers and only two women. About 40 percent of the competitors in this year's even were women, he said.

The  were held in conjunction with the SUP and Paddleboard Championships.

"It's a great family event," Hennessey said.
