Ree One Of 20 To Advance To SCGA Tournament

Mira Costa sophomore shoots a 3-over 75 in the CIF Finals at La Purisma Golf Course in Lompoc; Bay League most valuable player David Kim finishes with an 81.

Mira Costa High sophomore Ryann Ree rebounded from an early triple-bogey and finished strong en route to a round of 3-over 75 at the CIF Individual Finals on Monday at La Purisma Golf Course in Lompoc, and was one of 20 golfers to qualify for the SCGA Tournament next month.

Ree found himself in trouble on his second hole of the day, the par-4 14th, when he found the hazard off the tee. Ree would drop and put a second shot into the hazard, eventually making a seven on the 366-yard hole.

"After the triple, I knew I had plenty of holes left," he said.  "I just said to myself that I needed to keep cool and play my game.''

Ree did just that, stringing together seven consecutive pars before bogeying the fourth hole.  He would hit a wedge into the 433-yard fifth to 12 feet and made the putt for his first birdie of the round.

With the wind picking up at the 427-yard seventh, Ree played a punch shot from 120 yards out, knocking it to within five feet to make another birdie.  The par-3 9th was playing downwind for Ree and he used a seven iron to reach the 227-yard hole, then canned a 40-footer for his third birdie of the day and a front nine 35.

"My last experience here wasn't good at all and I just went out with the game plan of playing it safe the whole time and keeping the ball in play," Ree said.

Ree would finish with a 40 on the back nine, as a result of his triple bogey and a bogey on his final hole, the 12th.

His 75 was two shots under the cutline at 77, and he is one of 20 in the 99-player field to advance to the SCGA Tournament on June 3 in Temecula.

Ree's teammate, sophomore David Kim, shot an 81, putting an end to a very successful season in which he led the Bay League in scoring average and was named the most valuable player.

"David had not played the course before and he had a tough job ahead of himself. Shots can add up easily out there," coach Bob Timberlake said.

Patrick Cantlay of Anaheim Servite was the low man of the day, carding a 68 for a four-stroke win. He was the only player under par on the day, with just three golfers at even par.

"It's the kind of golf course that just bothers a lot of junior golfers," Timberlake said.  "It's demanding and there is a lot of trouble on the course, shot placement is at a premium."

Next Thursday, Ree will travel to Temecula and the SCGA Members Course where he will compete for the opportunity to advance to the California State Championship in Santa Maria.

Timberlake, who has had players advance as recently as 2006, feels confident about Ree's chances.

"Ryan is aggressive at times, sometimes it pays off more than others, but when he's on his game like he has been I like his chances," Timberlake said.
