Rogers, Dalhausser Advance in AVP

Local and visiting volleyball fans flock to The Strand to cheer on Rogers and Dalhausser, and Kessy and Ross in the AVP.

Olympic gold medalists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, gunning for an unprecedented fifth consecutive win at the Hermosa Beach Open, advanced on Saturday to the quarterfinals of the AVP event. But their day on the beach was not without its challenges.

After beating Brook Billings and Chris Icaza 21-11, 21-9, and Adrian Carambula and Russ Marchewka21-17, 21-15, Dalhausser and Rogers were extended to a third set by Casey Jennings and Brad Keenan. Jennings and Keenan won the first game 21-19, before Dalhausser and Rogers came back to take the next two 21-19, 16-14.

Dalhausser and Rogers will play John Mayer and Matt Prosser at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday for a berth in the semifinals, while Matt Fuerbringer and Nick Lucena take on Jeff Nygaard and Matt Olson.

In the women's draw, top-seeded Jennifer Kessy and April Ross advanced to the quarterfinals and are in line to win a fourth consecutive AVP Tournament.

Kessy and Ross were pushed in their opening match by Diane Copenhagen and Jaimi Gregory before winning in three sets. They then reeled off victories over Nancy Reynolds and Kelly Wing, and Ashley Ivy and Lisa Rutledge.

In round 4 of the winner's bracket Sunday, Kessy and Ross will play Angie Akers and Tyra Turner at 9:15 a.m., while Rachel Scott and Elaine Youngs will square off against Angela Lewis and Priscilla Lima.
