Updated: RUHS Runners Raise Money for Meet

Redondo Union's cross country teams are raising money for a trip to Nike Pre-Nationals in Oregon.

The Redondo Union High School varsity boys and girls cross country teams are raising money to fund a trip to the Nike Pre-Nationals invitational in Portland, OR at the end of September.

The runners, who were selling $5 car wash tickets during Saturday's Riviera Village Sidewalk Sale in neighboring Redondo Beach, have already raised more than $200—but they still have a ways to go.

It costs about $550 per runner to attend the meet on Sept. 24, and the high school plans to send at least two dozen people.

This would be the Sea Hawks' second trip to Pre-Nationals, said junior Kayla Ferron, whose mother is one of the coaches. The lady Sea Hawks won the girls overall varsity race last year.

"Our girls are the reigning champions, so that’s kind of exciting," said Coach Julie Ferron*. "It was such an incredible experience. It’s great for the kids, particularly since you see teams you don’t get to see during the season or run against. Some of the best runners on the West Coast will be there. It’s one of the most prestigious of all cross country meets."

The car wash fundraiser, which costs $5, is scheduled for Saturday at Osborn's Automotive at the intersection of South Pacific Coast Highway and Avenue B in Redondo Beach from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Here in Hermosa Beach, the students are selling $20 tickets, which can be purchased online, to the Sept. 7 showcase of comedians at the on Hermosa Avenue. Dinner will be available from 6:30 to 8 p.m., with performances slated from 8 to 9:30 p.m.

Donations also are accepted and tax-deductable.
