Study Shows the 'Average' SoCal Surfer

A report by the Surfrider Foundation and Surf-First finds the average age of surfers across Los Angeles County and how often they ride ocean waves (it's more than 100 times a year.)

The Surfrider Foundation this year decided to turn a spotlight on America's surfers in an inaugural U.S. Surf Economics Report (see accompanying study under photo.)

The report has been described by the foundation as "a socioeconomic and recreational profile of surfers in the U.S." Here are some of its findings:

  • How often does your average L.A. County surfer hit the waves?

Surfers nationwide tend to ride waves in the early morning hours, according to the report. Here in L.A. County, the surfing begins around 8 a.m. and continues for about a couple of hours.

The average L.A. County surfer has been surfing for about 15 years, and each year hits the waves about 108 times, according to the report.

  • Who is your average L.A. County surfer?

The report found that the median age for surfers in L.A. County is 34, about 67 percent of surfers have earned at least some college education, and about 67 percent are employed full time. The average household income for a L.A. County surfer is about $75,000, according to the report.
