White Sea Bass Biting in Hermosa

This summer sees some of the best white sea bass fishing in Hermosa Beach, anglers say. Plus, more tuna in San Diego and upcoming fishing trips.

White sea bass fishing in the Santa Monica Bay has broken open. The Highliner and its 10 passengers landed 30 white sea bass weighing up to 50 pounds last week. While the bite now has slowed for sport boats, private boaters continue to score some of the big croaker just off of the Hermosa Beach shoreline.

For example, local fisherman Keith Lambert was boating with a friend this week and reported landing a 50-pound white sea bass and 39-pound halibut. The first halibut of 2011 on the Redondo Special was caught nearby off Palos Verdes along with a variety of other species, including sargo, calico bass, sheepshead and rockfish.

Signs of a good tuna season continued in the waters off Baja California this week—the Pacific Voyager returned to Seaforth Sportfishing in San Diego on Wednesday from a two-day trip with 55 bluefin tuna and two yellowtail.

The hard-fighting tuna have been mostly in the 20 to 40-pound class with a few fish nearing 100 pounds.

“We saw spots of tuna all day long,” said Captain Scott Misel of the Condor who recently caught nine bluefin on an overnight trip. “It’s only a matter of time until they really bite.”

Tuna fanatics also are waiting —the traditional start to the Albacore season is Monday. Water temperatures, bait, and conditions appear to be ideal for a good tuna season this summer.

Island bite

Boats from Corona del Mar to San Pedro continue to catch copious amounts of barracuda and more sand bass each day—Captain Andy Siratt reported excellent barracuda fishing from the Enterprise out of Long Beach Marina Sportfishing on Wednesday.

“There are still a lot of sea bass, yellows and really good calico bass fishing at our islands,” said Captain John Ackley of the Westerly out of Long Beach Sportfishing. “It’s just a matter of time until it goes off again.”

Boats fishing Catalina, San Clemente and Catalina islands have been catching a few white sea bass with the smaller 6-pack boats getting the best of it.

The Palos Verdes coast also has been alive with a variety of species—calico bass, white sea bass, yellowtail, halibut, rockfish, and barracuda.

Fish with the pros

Philip Friedman Outdoors has two trips on the horizon—Hermosa Beach residents can join experts July 6 on a twilight fishing trip out of Long Beach Sportfishing from 6 p.m. to 12 midnight for $37. Another trip is planned for July 13. For more information call Captain Larry Moore at 714-329-3853.
