The 39th Annual Hermosa Beach Ironman competition went off without incident Thursday as hundreds competed in an event that requires competitors to swim a mile, paddle a mile and then chug a six-pack of beer without puking.

The Fourth of July tradition was started in Hermosa Beach in 1974 and although police kept a watchful eye on the event, no arrests or incidents occurred during the event.

This year, the two champions of the 2012 Hermosa Beach Ironman both defended their titles with Waterman's owner Jeff Bellandi winning the men's division and Annie Seawright winning the women's division of the race.
