Hula Hoop at Boardwalk, SUP on the Water

The annual International Surf Festival brings hordes of competitors and fans to Hermosa Beach. On Sunday, paddlers, swimmers, boogie boarders, surfers and beach volleyball athletes will give it their best shots. Coincidentally, Boardwalk fresh Burgers & F

The ocean will have it Sunday, "it" being racers on paddleboards and Stand Up Paddleboards, who will make their way to the Hermosa Beach Pier in International Surf Festival competition that begins in Manhattan Beach at 7:30 a.m.

The Velzy-Stevens Pier-to-Pier Paddleboard Championship will be followed by South Bay Youth Swims and Paddles that begin at 1 p.m. on the pier's north side. Youngsters will be divided by gender and have the opportunity to participate in rough water swimming, boogie board racing and surfboard racing. 

The second day of the surf fest's inaugural California Beach Volleyball  will take place Sunday, too, beginning at 9 a.m. at the pier.

The good news is that anyone, participant or not, who wants to check out the recently opened Boardwalk Fresh Burgers & Fries can do so by taking a short walk to 1031 Hermosa Avenue. The location is the second one (Costa Mesa is the first one) in California, with a third planned for Huntington Beach.

In Hermosa Beach, the burger and beer joint opens at 11 a.m. daily, and Sunday is the final day of their nine-day grand opening series of events.

Competitors with a waist that moves might want to join in the hula hoop fun. Boardwalk will hold a hula hoop contest on Sunday. If you're too tired to move or hula hooping isn't your thing, you can participate in a trivia contest.
