National Night Out in Hermosa Beach

The nationwide event, happening in Hermosa Beach on Tuesday, Aug. 7, is designed to combat crime and drug use.

Hermosa Beach is one of more than 15,000 communities that will host annual National Night Out events on Tuesday, Aug. 7.

National Night Out, designed to help communities band together to learn how to prevent crime and drug use, is the nation's largest annual crime prevention/safety event. Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, this year's event is expected to involve some 37,000 participants.

In Hermosa Beach, teams from the city's police, fire and public works departments and Los Angeles County lifeguards will spend approximately 20 minutes at six different blocks that are participating in National Night Out. Vehicles used by these public safety workers will also make the rounds.

According to Tracy Hopkins of Hermosa Beach Neighborhood Watch, neighbors come out into the street and get to know each other better, their public safety groups and the HB Neighborhood Watch coordinators during the event.

"National Night Out in Hermosa Beach is an enjoyable opportunity to build neighborhood spirit and public safety partnerships in our desire for a safer city," she said.

In 2007, HBNW was honored from among 11,000 communities as a national Neighborhood Watch Award Winner for taking part in what was the 24th annual National Night Out. 2007 was the first year in which the city participated in the event.

During National Night Out, communities have often thrown block parties, cookouts, and parades in celebration of the initiative.

HB has nearly 100 Neighborhood Watch groups, said Hopkins.
