City Honors Hermosa History Walk Committee

Mayor Michael DiVirgilio thanks the community event organizers for the trip down memory lane.

The first Walk in History 1900-1919 fundraiser last month succeeded in its effort to "present our culture and history to the community and the visitors of the city," according to Mayor Michael DiVirgilio.

At a City Council meeting Tuesday, the mayor presented a certificate of recognition to the history walk organizers. The event raised money for the Hermosa Beach Mural Project, a city initiative to paint 10 murals around town over the next 10 years.

"The efforts contributed significantly to the betterment of the community," DiVirgilio said.

Not only did the walk draw support for the community mural project, but it also exposed residents to local history. About 100 participants walked through town, stopping at historic landmarks. Local youth were invited to illustrate city history by painting a mural of their own, which was presented to the mayor and council.

"We will have it stretched and framed," said Carol Russell, the history walk event coordinator.

This appreciation of art, culture and history remains the reason why the history walk committee should be recognized for their efforts, DiVirgilio said. A second history walk is already being scheduled.
