Landmark Hermosa: Veterans Memorial

If you guessed the sundial veterans memorial for this morning's trivia, you were right. Friday marks Veterans Day.

The Hermosa Beach sundial veterans memorial first began as an idea from U.S. Marine veteran Ken Marks who aimed to salute local war heroes.

Marks approached the in 1992 with a proposal to build the memorial.

"I see a memorial that will tell me that my community and my country do appreciate and understand that my brothers have fallen for a purpose," Marks said in the Los Angeles Times in December 1992. "And that invigorates me to get back out there to help society."

With the city's approval, a committee of local veterans and citizens was formed to develop plans for the project, and after many meetings the team settled on a site next to the .

By 1994, at a cost of $25,000, the city's functional sundial memorial was built.

The local Vietnam Veterans of America, South Bay Chapter 53, is a sponsor of the memorial and its members clean and repair the sundial every month (see accompanying Patch video, which .)

As Friday marks , the community will honor servicemen and women in a special ceremony at the veterans memorial, starting at 5:30 p.m. in front of the Community Center. More than 100 locals last year.
