Patch Give 5: A Fork and Fireworks

As part of Patch's Give 5 initiative, Hermosa Beach editor Jacqueline Howard donates a few hours to picking up trash along the local coastline.

Within just three blocks along the beach—between 5th Street and 2nd Street—cigarette butts, crumbled paper, styrofoam, remnants of fireworks, and a metal fork littered the sand.

As part of Patch's nationwide Give 5 initiative Thursday, in which local editors across the country are given five paid work days throughout the year to volunteer in the communities they cover, I took it upon myself to clean up some of the trash along Hermosa's shoreline.

Even though I expected to encounter a couple of cigarette butts and gum wrappers, I was surprised to also find some remnants of crime—such as fireworks (which are illegal in the city without approval)—and dog feces.
