Patch Give 5: School Registration

Patch employees donate five business days a year to volunteering—this summer, time is spent at Hermosa Valley School.

Parents and students lined up at on Wednesday afternoon to register for the school year. Community volunteers helped with the process and, to do my part, I joined in handing out class schedules for eighth and seventh graders.

Some students squealed with glee when they saw they shared classes with other friends.

"We have social studies together," one girl screamed to another. The two then jumped up and down.

Other students said that they were nervous about how tough their class schedules could be—"I'm kind of scared," one boy mumbled while looking over his list of classes.

I volunteered with the registration as part of Patch's Give 5 program—the initiative encourages Patch editors across the country to volunteer on five paid work days throughout the year in their respective communities.

As I watched the students look over their class schedules, I smiled to myself, remembering the days when having math class with your best friend or sitting next to your crush in science lab meant everything.

The first day of school for Hermosa Valley students is Aug. 31.
