Monday marks Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is also a day of service.

The MLK Day of Service is part of the nationwide United We Serve and asks volunteers to spend a day making a positive impact on their community.

To help spark the urge to serve, here are three MLK Day-inspired celebrations and volunteer opportunities in the Los Angeles area:

Where and when: All day Monday at Los Feliz Elementary School, 1740 North New Hampshire Ave., Los Angeles

Why go: Volunteers will create murals in the playground space, paint school buildings and grounds, plant flowers and shrubs, and organize classroom areas. Toiletries for veterans will also be collected at the event. For more information, call L.A. Works, governed by the county Board of Directors, at 323-224-6510.

Where and when: Monday, 9 a.m. to noon, at White Point Nature Preserve, 1600 West Paseo Del Mar, San Pedro

Why go: Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service at the preserve by planting natives and repairing trails. Call Jill Wittman at 310-541-7613 for more information.

Where and when: Monday, 10:30 a.m., at Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Western, with an end point at Leimert Park in Los Angeles

Why go: Now in its 27th year, the parade is one of the largest in the nation.
