Where to Volunteer This Summer

Patch lists where in the Hermosa Beach area locals can give back to the community before the summer ends.

During the summer months in Hermosa Beach, there are many opportunities to spend free time volunteering before the school year begins in August. 

Earlier on Patch, serving the community. Here are places where you can do the same:

Volunteers can help out with sporting events at the Special Olympics of Southern California, as well as office management and event planning. For South Bay chapter opportunities, email Crystal Pauley at cpauley@sosc.org.

Volunteers at the Manhattan Beach Botanical Garden at 1236 N. Peck Ave. in neighboring Manhattan Beach work on weeding the garden every Friday morning from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Other gardening days are planned by appointment. To get involved, just show up at the facilities and ask to see the maintenance director.

At Meals on Wheels, located at 125 West Beryl St. in Redondo Beach, food preparation is done in the morning and meals delivered to seniors at noon. Call Clemente Torres at 310-318-2827 for information about how to volunteer.

The Surfrider Foundation (South Bay Chapter) is an international environmental organization that organizes beach cleanups, garden classes and tests local beach water quality. To learn more, contact beach cleanup Coordinator Chris Frias at 949-412-9730.

The Beach Cities Health District uses a volunteer corps of more than 650 people every year to help with youth services or assist walking groups. To sign up, fill out an application online.
