Gavin, your intellectual and eloquent response is much appreciated. So often dissenting commentsRead More are met with terse, disrespectful and often sophomoric rant. I am obviously in the minority here but I just don't see why this can't be a great way for the city to raise some much needed revenue. Our schools are laying off teachers and the general fund NEEDS the money. The 17.5 million dollar payout the city would have to pay EB would be devastating. As I see it, the benefits outweigh the costs. Please know Gavin that I never said nor implied that you were a horrible speller. I wanted to be sure what you meant, "legalize" is not a misspelled word, just a different one.

this is unbelievable. i feel like i'm in a movie, watching it as it unravels. HOW COULD THEY startRead More right off DRILLING with no notice to the public. i don't care what permits they need, this is such a sensitive topic, what idiot at E&B or our City Council didn't stop and think, wow, perhaps we ought to give notice do something to quiet any fears. NOPE, JUST DRILL. this is big company vs. little town. then add in our brillant Council, it really is a good movie. EXCEPT IT'S BEEN DONE ALREADY. we will all suffer if this goes forward. E&B continues to claim total transparency. well here we are, full disclosure, sure, sure sure. they got dinged by the County for no permit, that is chump change, do you think that will stop this bulldozer. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING. perhaps enuf folks aren't aware ? i'm starting to have nightmares. i'm right down on Monterey. please.

A city manager is deemed to be an expert on municiapl affairs. That is why they are compensatedRead More well, and deservingly so, for their difficult jobs. A failure of the magnitude referenced above is unacceptable at this level. It leaves an ordinary citizen questioning the ability of city administrators to carry out city business. An error of this magnitude in the private sector would not be accepted. I urge the Patch to launch a full investigation into Tom Bakaly's conduct regarding this matter. As a concerned citizen I will be utilizing my own financial resources over the next several weeks to determine if the City's conduct rises to the level of necesitating civil legal issue. I am prepared to devote significant financial resources to this endeavor.

When the good restaurants across the street are too packed, this place should get some business.

You can't beat the power of Gene and Paul of KISS to draw a big crowd, and Gene wasn't't that farRead More away. Nice place. I like to see them signing albums and giving back to to fans and the USA. They are very smart to have lasted and to have succeeded this long in a very tough business.

Not sure about Taco Bills or La Playita. From my memory LP was always where it is currently. IveRead More search for historical info on HB myself - get the usual founding and early life info but not the 80's and 90's info. I cannot even find a picture of Pier with cars on it. I used to head down to pier early Sat and Sun and park but had to go move the car every two hours to avoid getting a ticket - it was sufficient enough to roll the tires forward so they couldnt see the marking chalk. If you were good you could get 6 hours in one spot by doing this. Good memories! I really miss HB. Would love to pack it all in and move back. The wife and kids are all for it too - would love for my sons to grow up there surfing and just enjoying life. Not being so stressed about every little thing. Who knows, maybe someday Ill get the nerve to do it. In the meantime, I am always reading news about HB. Love the Patch and all the other local news outlets. Wish I could contribute more. Take care!

Yeah, I remember when there was a road instead of Pier Plaza and you could park in front of theRead More businesses if you found a space. I've also heard that location was home to Taco Bill's. What do you know about that? & I've heard that La Playita used to be on The Strand where Beach House Hotel is. Anyone know of a good historical pub on Hermosa Beach that has this kind of info?
Kevin Reifel April 24, 2013 at 02:53 pm
It was on pier and the strand. Henesseys expanded to where they are now. Back when you could park onRead More pier. And yes, the same Diana's

It is just great to see Doyle inducted and the community backing up surfers and its history. TheseRead More guys did it for the love of surfing, as there weren't all these big endorsement deals in those days. The past inductees are the Holy Grail of surfers. The best of the best, for those of you that may not know. Greg Noll rode one of the biggest waves ever on the North Shore of Oahu in Dec. '69, that washed houses off of the beach, and retired right then. Velzy has a break named after him on the North Shore, Velzyland. So Mile joins a select group here. Congrats Mike

Liz, Thank you for the very kind coverage of our Green Idea House dedication ceremony. It has beenRead More great fun sharing what we have learned and making new friends in the process.

A traumatic experience for sure, I hope she gets the help she needs on her road to recovery. Not toRead More make light of this topic or her situation. I go back and forth on this gun debate. I don't own a gun and never have had the reason to have needed a gun, so with that said. Having a gun to prevent a crime actually doesn't prevent the crime, it may deter the crime, however it may not lessen the severity of the crime. I'm guessing if you have to use your gun to stop an assailant, I am guessing the emotional trauma that you have to live with as an innocent having to harm another human being is better than the alternative. In fact I offer this solution to the gun possession debate - besides military/law enforcement either allow every one to carry a gun or only allow women to possess them. I can see that near-futuristic society film playing out in my head now. (Working Title - "About Damn Time") Starting with the first women to become president, a shocking string of brutal copycat serial crimes against women take place, when as a reaction legislation is passed for women only to be allowed to carry weapons, There are harsh penalties for men found in possession of guns. Violent crime in this country drops to near zero. The End! Stay tuned for the sequel - Uprising!

For the most part I agree, but after drinking 5 or 6 drinks, she could have killed an innocentRead More bystander or lost the gun to the guy who raped her.
George Ziegler April 2, 2013 at 04:04 pm
I'm with you Gene. Law abiding, proficient gun owners don't even have to draw. Just be visible inRead More pairs. They'd be happy to volunteer at no cost to the city, and pay for their licenses and training.

Well I guess they got off to a great start drilling and waking people up on May 7. IncredibleRead More timing and arrogence. http://www.nobpinhb.com/2013/05/the-city-of-hermosa-beach-is-drilling.html

Mr. Finch, This responds to your statement in your letter that "the 1993 CUP and OilRead More Production Code requirements are more restrictive than the general noise requirements in the City’s Municipal Code." That statement suprised me, so I checked out our Municipal Code. It turns out that Section 8.24.040, subsection (C) of our Municipal code, titled "Specific Prohibited Noises" prohibits, from 10 pm to 8 am, any engine, motor or any other mechanical equiment from emitting any noise or sound from being audible at the property line of the property from which the sound is emanating. That means from 10 pm to 8 am, we are not supposed to hear any audible sounds coming from the City yard if we are standing on the sidewalk at the yard's property line. So are you telling City residents that if E&B oil drilling project starts, one can stand at the property line of the City yard between 10 pm and 8 am, and cannot hear any audible noise or sound? If not, are you saying that E&B will have to violate the Municipal Code, or will the City have to amend the Municipal Code to allow the drilling to proceed? I know you want to set the record straight, so I look forward to your response. Thank you. Keep Hermosa hermosa.

To: Michael Finch - Vice President of Health, Safety & Environment, I really have to laugh atRead More your title and the quality of work you do for your company. Being the Vice President of Health, Safety, & Environment for E&B you are probably the person who should be held accountable on E&B behalf for spilling 16,000 gallons of toxic fluid in California over the past 6 years according to the reports E&B has legally had to file with the "California Emergency Management Agency". That is almost 7 gallons of toxic fluid a day for the past 6 years! http://stophermosabeachoil.com/?p=1649 You have been doing a stand up job. Maybe a promotion to Executive Vice President is in order! There is nothing that I like more than having an 18 wheeler rolling down pier avenue along Valley every 30 minutes especially when school kids are getting out. That is something we Hermosa residents are used to daily right? It will be great when you are ripping up Valley road to 190th street to put a gas line in. That noise of construction is tolerable? Looking at the hack job on the report of someone drawing "squiggly" lines to represent noise pollution is a joke. Even they said it would be above normal. Keep up the great work, your doing a stand up job! HA!

And here I thought I needed to Drive to San Diego to experience craft breweries and bars. Nice job.

As a South Redondo resident, I am looking forward to any new restaurants opening in the area. ThereRead More are currently so few restaurants that I would want to bring my out of town guests as the service and food at most of them leave much to be desired. Good luck Rock & Brew, I can't wait to come check it out!
Rachellg April 26, 2013 at 01:11 pm
@Bob, I totally agree with you! If you buy near a school, don't bitch about the kids or the 15mphRead More speed limit. If you buy near a train track don't bitch about the noise of the train. If you buy near a bar... @Judy, you sound like the angry one. If you don't want to live near the bars, don't buy near the bars, it's as simple as that. No where is anyone saying that drunks on the road at anytime is a good thing, in fact, what Bob said is that it has been shown that DUI's have gone down. I don't know if this is true or not, but you have given no evidence that it isn't.
Judy Garland April 25, 2013 at 03:59 pm
wow, Bob, not sure just WHY you are so angry! Perhaps a "drinking problem"? YouRead More obviously don't have drunks putting things in your plants or peeing on your house! You probably live EAST of PCH, perhaps YOU are the one to move? And we do NOT need more drunks on the road after midnite either! With your suggestion, they can hit the poor people going to work early in the morning….perhaps "getting a LIFE" might be a GREAT idea instead of hanging out in bars til 4 a.m.!????
Bob Atkins April 25, 2013 at 02:48 pm
Wohoo! Its about time we grew up children! 4am closing is a GREAT idea. I don't see any reason whyRead More bars can't stay open 24/7. After decades of having an 11pm closing time for pubs, in Nov 2005, the Brits finally decided that it made more sense to allow pubs to remain open 24/7! Forcing an early closing time just makes people drink the same in shorter period of time and then forces those drunk patrons out onto the street at closing time. Since the Brits allowed 24/7 pubs, the number of drunk and disorderly and DUI issues have gone WAY down! Patrons can drink without the 'pressure' of knowing that they have to get their partying in by a certain time. If they pass out the pub pours them into a cab and sends them home. Better still, they can hang out at the pub since most also serve food and coffee which allows patrons to sober up before they leave. Yesterday, I saw a petitioner going around asking for signatures for a measure that would close the bars in Hermosa one hour EARLIER! What a selfish and dumbass idea. If people don't like living in the best beach town in CA then LEAVE! Stop moaning about the Hermosa nightlife! It is an important part of the character of Hermosa Beach and one of the main reasons my wife and I chose to buy a house here 13 years ago! If you don't like Hermosa's nightlife, go live in Manhattan Beach or better still the perfectly sanitized stepfordville of Palos Verdes. Don't ruin my town with your fascist attitudes!
