I don't own a gun and never have had the reason to have needed a gun, so with that said. Having a gun to prevent a crime actually doesn't prevent the crime, it may deter the crime, however it may not lessen the severity of the crime. I'm guessing if you have to use your gun to stop an assailant, I am guessing the emotional trauma that you have to live with as an innocent having to harm another human being is better than the alternative. In fact I offer this solution to the gun possession debate - besides military/law enforcement either allow every one to carry a gun or only allow women to possess them.
I can see that near-futuristic society film playing out in my head now. (Working Title - "About Damn Time") Starting with the first women to become president, a shocking string of brutal copycat serial crimes against women take place, when as a reaction legislation is passed for women only to be allowed to carry weapons, There are harsh penalties for men found in possession of guns. Violent crime in this country drops to near zero. The End! Stay tuned for the sequel - Uprising!
