What get's me is that smokers apparently don't consider throwing their cigarette butts out of carRead More windows or on the beach or anywhere else in public places as littering. Here in the Beach Cities all those butts end up in the ocean. If you smoke please dispose of your cig butts in proper receptacles!!

I thought the beach was a " smoke free zone " obviously just another unenforced "Read More feel good " useless law passed by the " feel good " City Council. Laws that have no mechanism for enforcement are useless and penalize only the rule follower.

It is just great to see Doyle inducted and the community backing up surfers and its history. TheseRead More guys did it for the love of surfing, as there weren't all these big endorsement deals in those days. The past inductees are the Holy Grail of surfers. The best of the best, for those of you that may not know. Greg Noll rode one of the biggest waves ever on the North Shore of Oahu in Dec. '69, that washed houses off of the beach, and retired right then. Velzy has a break named after him on the North Shore, Velzyland. So Mile joins a select group here. Congrats Mike

We are going to have such a great time -- the O2H paddlers know how to party! I'm a 10-year survivorRead More of sarcoma and I'm on the board of the Sarcoma Alliance. All the money raised Saturday will go to help people get a second opinion from a specialist. A lot of sarcoma patients have to travel from out of state to see an expert. Over the years, our Assistance Fund has given out 470 grants totaling $204,142. Sarcoma is a cancer of connective tissue, including bone, muscle, cartilage, nerve and fat tissue. It can arise in any part of the body at any age, from newborns on up. It represents 15 percent of the cancer in children.

I wondered why there's an age range, too, and will ask and report back.

why only to 38? That is very unacceptable.

Jerry, although not original from here, became a true L.A. native. The truest, perhaps, than anyRead More luminary in memory. Like Randy Newman, he LOVED L.A. He reflected the dichotomous nature of Angelenos -- down to earth and hip Hollywood glamour. The chants in rival arenas when the Lakers played ("Beat L.A.") simply revealed their envy of Los Angeles and an erroneous image of L.A. as purely superficial and phony. True, Buss was flamboyant and a playboy. But he was also a self-made man, rising from his austere humble upbringing in Iowa where he rummaged trash cans for phone books to use as firewood to heat the tiny home he lived in with his mother. I was fortunate enough to meet Jerry Buss at Chasens restaurant where I was celebrating my mom and dad's anniversary. I was shocked when mom walked right up to his table and introduced herself as his mother's hair stylist. I had no idea. "Is this your granddaughter?" she asked. No mom, she wasn't. And I hadn't the heart to inform mom of Buss's lifestyle. We can only hope any sibling rivalry amongst the Buss children will be put to rest in the interest of Los Angeles ... and to honor the memory of the greatest owner in sports franchise history.

Thanks, Jerry, for giving L.A. such a GREAT basketball team all these years. We won't see the likesRead More of you again. R.I.P.

Truly a nice man, very down to earth, did not flaunt his wealth. I was a news photographer coveringRead More the LA` sports scene, when Buss purchased the JKC sports domain we all asked who is this guy (none of us in the media had ever heard of him)? He turned out be a blessing to the LA sports scene, he was approachable, taking time to converse with you and was always humble. Just a plain nice man. Unlike Cook he was always present at his teams games and did not sit in the owners box but among the ordinary fans. RIP Dr Buss your legacy will remain long after any of us have departed

Thank you Liz! I appreciate you correcting that error.
Liz Spear (Editor) February 7, 2013 at 01:45 am
Actually, the article was correct but perhaps not clear enough, so I've amended it to now readRead More "Olson's assistant coaches, who presumably would step up to the plate to coach the team during Olson's absence, decided not to step in to fill his shoes as a way of supporting him, leaving the baseball program in a state of limbo." It previously read, "... decided not to to support him, ..." which was true.
Liz Spear (Editor) February 7, 2013 at 01:40 am
Crystle, My mistake. I know the coaches absolutely support Olson and will correct the misinformationRead More now. My apologies for the error. Don't know how that happened.

Well said.

I, for one, would not be comfortable with a vengeful parent "observing" the class I'm in.Read More I am not saying that you are one of these parents, I'm just trying to point out that Costa may have not allowed you to come into the classroom in order to ensure that students feel safe. If you were to observe his class, however, you would find that these rumors of extreme abuse are all fabricated.
Renna Carter February 5, 2013 at 01:46 am
While I respect your viewpoint, most of us students would like to know when something like this isRead More going on. We also support healthy discussions of somewhat controversial topics such as this one.
