Kaley German Remembers Rachel Kekauoha

The Redondo Beach resident tells Manhattan Beach Patch about her best friend, Rachel Kekauoha. The two were closer than sisters, she says, and Rachel knew everything about her.

Kaley German shares her thoughts and feelings about her best friend Rachel Kekauoha, a 2011 Mira Costa High graduate, freshman at Brigham Young University, Idaho and Manhattan Beach resident, who died on April 6 in an SUV rollover while on her way to spend time with Kaley at Laka Havasu. The funeral service for Rachel is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 21 at the Redondo 2nd Ward building of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 715 Knob Hill Ave., Redondo Beach. Visitation for Rachel Kekauoha Begins Tonight

Friends and family will gather tonight at Rice Mortuary in Torrance for a public visitation. Another visitation and funeral service will take place Saturday in Redondo Beach beginning at 10 a.m.

Memorial services for 18-year-old Manhattan Beach resident Rachel Kekauoha begin at 5 p.m. with a visitation at Rice Mortuary, 5310 Torrance Blvd., Torrance. Friday's visitation is scheduled to last until 9 p.m.  Another visitation will be held before the funeral service from 10-11 a.m. at the Redondo 2nd Ward building of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 715 Knob Hill Ave., Redondo Beach. The funeral service is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the same location on Saturday, April 21st. Rachel will be buried at Green Hills Memorial Park, 27501 S. Western Ave., Rancho Palos Verdes.  You can go online to sign an online guestbook. Dick Clark Dies at 82

According to reports from ABC 7 and TMZ, the legendary producer, radio and TV host had a 'massive' heart attack.

Famed radio and TV host and producer Dick Clark has died, according to reports from TMZ.com and local TV station KABC, channel 7. Clark, whose health had declined since having a stroke in 2004, reportedly died of a massive heart attack. He was 82 years old. Millions of Americans grew up watching his signature show "American Bandstand," which helped bring many classic rock and roll acts to prominence. More recent generations will remember ringing in the New Year with Clark's annual "New Year's Rockin' Eve" special, which Clark handed over to Ryan Seacrest in 2006.

MB Resident Dies in SUV Rollover on Interstate

College freshman Rachel Kekauoha, whose parents and brother live in Manhattan Beach, was on her way to Lake Havasu when the SUV she was riding in rolled over several times and she was ejected.

Rachel Kekauoha, a Manhattan Beach resident, 2011 graduate of Mira Costa High School and freshman at Brigham Young University, Idaho, died Friday, April 6 around 3:27 a.m. when she was ejected from the vehicle she was riding in, Manhattan Beach Patch has confirmed. According to Dave Carter of the San Bernardino County Coroner's Office, Rachel was a front seat passenger in a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder SUV whose driver "over-corrected" after the vehicle began to drift off the road. She was not wearing a seat belt, he said. The rollover occurred on Interstate 40 in rural Ludlow, according to Carter. Rachel's father Kelland told MB Patch she was on her way to Lake Havasu. Rachel was beautiful in every way. I've never met someone (let alone at her age) that was so gentle, generous, forgiving, loving, talented and dedicated. In her 18 years, she touched the lives of so many people. Had she lived, there is no doubt Rachel would have accomplished great things.   more ›

Former Coastal Commission Director Dies

Longtime Coastal Commission Director Peter Douglas, 69, died on Sunday.

Peter Douglas, executive director of the California Coastal Commission, died Sunday, according to the commission's chief deputy, Susan Hansch.  Douglas was appointed director of the Coastal Commission in 1985, and stepped down from the post in June of last year. He battled throat and lung cancer in recent years.  Read Douglas' full obituary here.

Award-Winning Singer Whitney Houston Dead at 48

Houston died at the Beverly Hilton Saturday, according to police.

Whitney Houston was a Grammy winner, earned countless Billboard Music Awards, American Music Awards—even a couple of Emmys. But on the eve of the 2012 Grammy Awards, the singer and actress died at the age of 48. Although Houston's publicist had not announced where Houston died on Feb. 11, the Beverly Hills Police Department said she was at the Beverly Hilton. Fans flocked to the hotel following news of the singer's death. "When we heard the news, we just wanted to come out and see if it was true, and also see them bring her body out—so we could see if it was real," Angeleno Marquit Strozier told Beverly Hills Patch.

Year in Review: Hermosans Remembered

As the end of 2011 nears, Patch takes a moment to remember those lost in the community this year—please share any losses and condolences.

While there was much to celebrate in Hermosa Beach in 2011, the community also mourned the loss of some locals. Patch would like to dedicate this moment of reflection to them. John Workman, 73 Longtime Hermosa Beach City Treasurer John Workman died in November, just days after losing his post as City Treasurer in a municipal election. LeRoy Grannis, 93 Legendary photographer and Hermosa Beach native died in February at the age of 93. Many locals paddled out to sea in his memory.
