Small Plane Enters President's Air Space Forced to Land

The aircraft was intercepted by fighter jets and was required to land after entering restricted airspace.

A small private airplane was forced to land at El Monte Airport today after the pilot apparently inadvertently entered air space that was restricted due to President Barack Obama's visit to the Southland. The aircraft was intercepted by fighter jets and was required to land about 10 a.m., and the pilot was interviewed by members of the United States Secret Service, said El Monte police Lt. Dan Burlingham. Preliminary indications were that the pilot "wasn't paying attention'' and unknowingly violated the restricted air space, Burlingham said.

Sheriff's Search for Bike Thieves' Victims

Los Angeles County Sheriffs are looking for victims of a ring of bike thieves who used Craigslist and other tricks to steal high-end bikes.

Authorities today sought victims of a ring of thieves who stole nearly 200 expensive mountain bicycles with an estimated total value of $250,000. Sheriff's spokeswoman Nicole Nishida said authorities have arrested three men allegedly involved in the thefts: Julian Herrera, 23, and his brother Jamie Herrera, 21, both of Los Angeles; and Alberto Mejia, 34, of Colton. At a news conference Wednesday morning, officials displayed 20 recovered bicycles and 40 recovered wheels and ask victims to come forward and retrieve their property. The thieves allegedly used social media, including Craigslist, to target victims in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, San Bernardino and Ventura counties, Nishida said. Board Approves Drug Dog Agreement

The Redondo Beach Board of Education approves a memorandum of understanding with the city to bring drug-sniffing dogs to Redondo Union High School.

With a 3-2 vote, the Redondo Beach Board of Education approved a memorandum of understanding with the city of Redondo Beach on Tuesday night that paves the way to bring drug-sniffing dogs to Redondo Union High School. Board members Drew Gamet and Todd Loewenstein dissented. According to Assistant Superintendent Frank DeSena, the Redondo Beach Unified School District has been ready to have the drug dogs at the high school since the beginning of the year; however, City Manager Bill Workman recommended the district and the city sign a memorandum of understanding. Crime Blotter: Attempted Scam Foiled

One attempt at getting money from a resident is foiled when she checks the story out, plus bike thefts, a robbery, and a burglary.

April 22: Robbery, 2100 block of Hermosa Avenue. Victim was walking when unknown males began kicking and hitting him before taking his property and fleeing. April 24: Attempted Grand Theft, 2800 block of The Strand. An elderly resident received a call that her grandson was arrested in Equador, and needed more than $3,000 for his bail and defense. The resident asked her daughter about the story and was told it was a scam. No money was sent. April 25: Bicycle Theft, 600 block of 30th Street. The victim left his bicycle unlocked in front of his residence on 04-18-12 at 2 a.m. At 8 a.m., the victim returned and discovered his bike missing. The bike was an 18 spedd blue/black road bike, extra-large frame. There is no information on the suspect…

South Bay Authorities to Participate in Drug Disposal Initiative

South Bay residents today can drop off expired, unwanted or unused prescription drugs at different locations throughout the area.

Local law enforcement agencies today will participate in a national program to get rid of possibly dangerous prescription drugs in people's homes. The Drug Enforcement Administration's National Take-Back Initiative is designed to focus national attention on the proper disposal of unwanted or unused prescription drugs, said Natalie Jimenez of the L.A. County Department of Public Works. Manhattan Beach Armed Robbery Ends in Standoff

Two suspects are taken into custody after allegedly trying to rob Pier 1 Imports.

Two men were arrested Sunday after Manhattan Beach Police responded to an armed robbery call at Pier 1 Imports at 1800 Rosecrans Ave.  Manhattan Beach Police Lt. Steve Tobias said the men were arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and armed robbery. The incident was first reported at 7:04 p.m., said Rachael Parker, MBPD records tech. During the three-hour standoff, police surrounded the store and evacuated nearby businesses. Workers left the store without incident. Police negotiators established communication with the suspects, who were left trapped inside Pier 1 Imports alone, said Tobias.  The suspects surrendered just after 10:30 p.m.  Manhattan Beach police were supported by several other agencies during the operation, including members …

The following are a list of crimes reported to the Hermosa Beach Police Department, provided by the Hermosa Beach Neighborhood Watch and Crimereports.com April 10: Theft, 600 Block of 4th Street, a black and white bicycle with black fenders and white walls was taken. The owner also did not know when. No suspects were observed taking the bicycle. April 12: Robbery, 700 block of Pier Avenue, the suspect entered Vons grocery store, loaded up a shopping cart with liquid laundry detergent and toilet paper and pushed it outside without paying for the items. Store Loss Prevention officer met with the suspect outside, who resisted and struggled with the officer. The officer eventually controlled and detained the suspect. The suspect's car was …

Four Businesses Cited for Providing Alcohol to Minor

A minor decoy sting operation on Friday in Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and El Segundo results in citations to businesses and employees who provide alcohol to a minor.

Four establishments were cited for providing alcohol to a minor on Friday, April 13 during a sting, according to Manhattan Beach Police Sergeant Chris Vargas in a press release, including Manhattan Mart in Hermosa Beach. Fresh & Easy and Oceana Bistro Cafe, both in MB, received citations as did El Tarasco Mexican Restaurant in El Segundo. Employees at each business were cited, too. The minor decoy sting was conducted by MB, HB and ES police with assistance from Alcoholic Beverage Control agents. A total of 55 businesses did not provide alcohol to a minor when asked, according to Vargas.

Search for Pier Jumper Called Off

Authorities call off the search for David Thompson, 22, who jumped off the Redondo Beach Pier with an unidentified woman late Saturday evening.

Updated 10 a.m. Monday. Authorities have indefinitely suspended the search for the man who jumped into the ocean from the Redondo Beach Pier late Saturday night, authorities said Sunday evening. Divers from the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Dive Team and a helicopter crew from the U.S. Coast Guard spent Sunday morning searching for the body of David Thompson, 22, to no avail. Divers ended their search for David Thompson, 22, when darkness fell Sunday, and there's no indication they will resume, said dispatch supervisor Michael Pittman. The U.S. Coast Guard helicopter broke off its search at 1 p.m. Sunday, said Danny Phee, a civilian search and rescue controller. MB Resident Dies in SUV Rollover on Interstate

College freshman Rachel Kekauoha, whose parents and brother live in Manhattan Beach, was on her way to Lake Havasu when the SUV she was riding in rolled over several times and she was ejected.

Rachel Kekauoha, a Manhattan Beach resident, 2011 graduate of Mira Costa High School and freshman at Brigham Young University, Idaho, died Friday, April 6 around 3:27 a.m. when she was ejected from the vehicle she was riding in, Manhattan Beach Patch has confirmed. According to Dave Carter of the San Bernardino County Coroner's Office, Rachel was a front seat passenger in a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder SUV whose driver "over-corrected" after the vehicle began to drift off the road. She was not wearing a seat belt, he said. The rollover occurred on Interstate 40 in rural Ludlow, according to Carter. Rachel's father Kelland told MB Patch she was on her way to Lake Havasu. Rachel was beautiful in every way. I've never met someone (let alone at her age) that was so gentle, generous, forgiving, loving, talented and dedicated. In her 18 years, she touched the lives of so many people. Had she lived, there is no doubt Rachel would have accomplished great things.   more ›
