The MIra Costa High boys volleyball team defeats Dana Hills at home Saturday in a CIF Southern Section Division I quarterfinal match.
The third-seeded Mira Costa boys volleyball team will have the home court advantage Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they play second-seeded Esperanza, a team that beat them in mid-April with a 25-23, 25-20, 25-23 win in the finals of the Karch Kiraly Tournament of Champions in Santa Barbara. That loss was the last time the Mustangs have gone down to the competition, winning 14 matches in a row. With a 3-2 vote, the Redondo Beach Board of Education approved a memorandum of understanding with the city of Redondo Beach on Tuesday night that paves the way to bring drug-sniffing dogs to Redondo Union High School. Board members Drew Gamet and Todd Loewenstein dissented. According to Assistant Superintendent Frank DeSena, the Redondo Beach Unified School District has been ready to have the drug dogs at the high school since the beginning of the year; however, City Manager Bill Workman recommended the district and the city sign a memorandum of understanding. The online news publication released its annual list of the "Best High Schools" in the country Tuesday. Office wins competitive bid that was part of state-wide program.
The Los Angeles County Office of Education will receive $40,500 in state funds to enforce tobacco-free school policies and collect data on the prevalence of tobacco use and other behaviors that put students' health at risk, state officials announced today. More than $410,000 in Tobacco Use Prevention Education dollars from the state Department of Education went to 30 districts across California. The winners in TUPE competitive bidding demonstrated the greatest tobacco-use prevention efforts, and proposed programs that will likely be effective, said state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson. Students from Mis Amigos Spanish enrichment program at Hermosa View School perform and share Mexican culture.
On Friday, May 4, students at Hermosa View School got a fun look at Mexican culture in honor of Cinco de Mayo. Students from the after school Spanish Enrichment Program at the school performed folklorico dances and sang La Bamba and Cielito Lindo for the rest of the student body. The Mis Amigos program is run and taught by parent Monica Linnell, who was born in Mexico. She started the program in 2009 as a way to build bridges and expose children to other languages. "It started as a volunteer position," she said about the program. She is currently teaching 16 students conversational Spanish. Forty-one girls have been selected to lead songs and cheers at community events and school activities for the 2012-2013 school year. And, they've already begun to cheer others on.
If you get out and about in Manhattan Beach, you're pretty much guaranteed to see the Mira Costa High School Pep Squad leading cheers and songs at school, community and competitive activities. Yes, "Rah, Rah, Sis Boom Bah" in the hands of MCHS students is about the best it can get. And now, members for the 2012-13 school year have been announced and include: The new squad is already busy: They will begin their community outreach at the Grand View Gator Run on June 2, host a summer cheer camp July 16-20 at MCHS and continue providing sideline leadership and spirit throughout the school year at every football, basketball and volleyball game. Anger over contract talks has faculty planning rolling two day strike at local schools, including CSU Dominguez Hills and CSU Long Beach.
California State University teachers voted overwhelmingly to authorize two-day rolling strikes at the system's 23 campuses in response to what their union calls needlessly drawn-out contract negotiations. The vote by members of the California Faculty Association does not necessarily mean a strike will be called, it is just an authorization for the union's leadership to call one. "We have said all along that we do not want to strike, but we will if that is what is necessary," CFA President Lillian Taiz, a history professor at Cal State Los Angeles, said. More than $150,000 was raised in support of the Richstone Family Center with the help of the participants of this year's 25th Annual Richstone Walk, which took place on Sunday, April 28. Walkers, consisting of school children, business owners and friends, traversed the ground from the Manhattan Beach Pier to the Hermosa Beach Pier and back again.

Winning students from Hermosa View and Hermosa Valley Schools receive certificates for their anti-littering posters.
The children gathered around MRFy (pronounced Murphy), a robot brought along by Consolodated Disposal to last week's Hermosa Beach City Council meeting to help honor the 11 winning students for their anti-litter posters. Over 350 students from Hermosa View and Hermosa Valley schools had submitted entries, with the winners being pulled from each grade, from kindergarten through eighth. Mayor Jeff Duclos pointed out that businesses along Pier Avenue have agreed to display the artwork in their windows. "We'd like to honor them tonight," he said about the winning entries.
