The Hermosa Beach Fire Department (HBFD) consists of one station…More with 18 personnel, one assistant fire chief and one fire chief. The department also hires ambulance operators/interns for future firefighters. The department's history traces back to 1907, when Hermosa Beach incorporated. In addition, a past HBFD fire chief has been credited with starting a national trend of buying new white-painted fire engines instead of the traditional red. </p>
<p>Three platoons rotate a 48-hour schedule. The department has three fire engines and two ambulances. Two of engines are front line, with one for reserve. </p>
<p>Currently, 16 out of 18 fire personnel have paramedic status. Hermosa Beach has provided paramedic services within the fire department since 1977. There is a minimum of four paramedics per shift. Approximately 80 percent of the calls received by the department involve emergency medical services.</p>
