The U.S. Sailing Association, the national governing body for sailing, has appointed an independent review panel to investigate the crash of the Aegean during the annual Lexus Newport Beach to Ensenada Yacht Race. Pieces of the Aegean—a 37-foot Hunter 376—and the bodies of three of its crew were found floating in a two-mile debris field near the Coronado Islands on April 28. The skipper's body was discovered a week later. The MIra Costa High boys volleyball team defeats Dana Hills at home Saturday in a CIF Southern Section Division I quarterfinal match.
The third-seeded Mira Costa boys volleyball team will have the home court advantage Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they play second-seeded Esperanza, a team that beat them in mid-April with a 25-23, 25-20, 25-23 win in the finals of the Karch Kiraly Tournament of Champions in Santa Barbara. That loss was the last time the Mustangs have gone down to the competition, winning 14 matches in a row. The winning 25-foot wave was ridden at the Redondo Breakwater.
Dan Connell, Hermosa Beach resident, has won the 2012 South Boardriders Big Wave Challenge, the club announced last month. The winning 25-foot wave was photographed by Randy Ruby and was selected from over 40 admissions by a 15-member panel of respected local surfers that made the decision on which was the biggest wave ridden in the South Bay. Connell, along with Derek Levy and college student Angelo Luhrsen rode their waves at the Redondo Breakwater. Two other finalists, surfboard builder Tyler Hatzikian and mushroom farmer Matt Parker were photographed at Hammerland. Forty-one girls have been selected to lead songs and cheers at community events and school activities for the 2012-2013 school year. And, they've already begun to cheer others on.
If you get out and about in Manhattan Beach, you're pretty much guaranteed to see the Mira Costa High School Pep Squad leading cheers and songs at school, community and competitive activities. Yes, "Rah, Rah, Sis Boom Bah" in the hands of MCHS students is about the best it can get. And now, members for the 2012-13 school year have been announced and include: The new squad is already busy: They will begin their community outreach at the Grand View Gator Run on June 2, host a summer cheer camp July 16-20 at MCHS and continue providing sideline leadership and spirit throughout the school year at every football, basketball and volleyball game. Rockfishing continues to be very good in the Santa Monica Bay.
Southern California anglers continue to experience good rockfishing as they await the beginning of the 2012 surface fishing season. There have been some encouraging signs south of the border as well as improving conditions in our local waters. The Tradition out of Redondo Sportfishing has been red hot in the Santa Monica Bay. Anglers have been catching limits of rockfish, sculpin and a few nice fat lingcod on most trips. Jimmy Bass from Tradition Sportfishing also believes that a barracuda bite is imminent. “Water temperatures have been up over 60 degrees and there are huge spots of bait around,” Bass said. “Good conditions and food are what you need for this whole thing to take off.” Captain Andy Siratt of the Enterprise reported seeing…

At yesterday's press conference, Magic Johnson and Guggenheim Baseball Management lowered the parking fee at the stadium for games. Was this a good move?
At the May 2 press conference, Guggenheim Baseball Management, the new owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers, announced an immediate $5 reduction in the $15 parking price. It has been widely reported that prior owner Frank McCourt, easily the most hated man in Los Angeles, kept ownership of the parking lots surrounding the stadium after a messy divorce forced him to file bankruptcy and sell the team. That morning, prior to the press conference, David Kippen, of the Los Angeles Times, wrote that fans were unhappy with McCourt retaining the parking lots, and that they should boycott those parking lots by taking public transportation. The Los Angeles Dodgers' Frank McCourt era officially ended today when the sale of the team to a management group that includes Earvin "Magic" Johnson was completed, one day later than expected. The court-approved sale agreement between Frank McCourt and Major League Baseball called for the sale of the Dodgers "to be consummated no later than April 30," but there was a delay in getting final approval of some of the legal documents. The team is now owned by Guggenheim Baseball Management LLC. Mark R. Walter, the chief executive officer of Guggenheim Partners, is the controlling partner.
