Slides and copters and zoos, oh my!
If you've lived in the Beach Cities for a while, you've probably gone to a Fiesta Hermosa. We have gone to every one since moving to the South Bay, and I'm sure I will drag my husband there again in the future. Speaking of dragging, we had to drag my son Smith away from the fair Monday, as he was nowhere near ready to go. Why would a toddler love Fiesta Hermosa? The Beer Garden, you say? Nay, that's my man-child husband who likes that. First, the petting zoo. I'm convinced these animals are drugged because there were a ton of toddlers running around and shoving food in their furry faces, and the animals were seemingly nonplussed, save the surly llama. He didn't lash out at anyone, but I think he was ready to pack a wallop. He is a pack…

Fiesta Hermosa features artists, jewelers, sculptors, crafters, food vendors, music and more.
The sounds of live music and the aroma of sizzling food wafted through Hermosa Beach on Saturday, the first day of the three-day Fiesta Hermosa. Thousands of people attended the annual festival, which continues Labor Day, to take in the sights, sounds, smells and art of the beach city. Besides food, the various vendors offered posters, paintings, ceramic ware, jewelry, sculptures and more for attendees to buy. Patch even joined in the fun, offering free coffee to the early birds—click through our photo gallery to see our booth and more of the sights from Fiesta Hermosa.

The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce presents a total of $18,040 to five Hermosa Beach nonprofits that provided volunteers at the Memorial Day fiesta.
Five Hermosa Beach nonprofit organizations have each earned thousands of dollars for volunteering at the Fiesta Hermosa during Memorial Day weekend. The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce presented the Kiwanis Club, Women’s Club, Hermosa Beach Art Walk, Hermosa Beach Education Foundation and Arts Foundation with $3,608 checks during a City Council meeting Tuesday night—totaling $18,040. Each year the Chamber of Commerce offers 10 Hermosa Beach nonprofit groups an opportunity to volunteer at the Memorial Day or Labor Day Fiesta Hermosa’s charity beer and wine gardens. Then the chamber shares part of its funds collected with each group. The Chamber of Commerce took over the Fiesta Hermosa events in the late 1970s as a way to generate funds …

How many cookies and scoops of ice cream can you eat in four minutes? Tap into your inner cookie monster with Chunk-n-Chip at this year's Labor Day Fiesta Hermosa.
Calling all cookie monsters: the Chunk-n-Chip food truck aims to satisfy your sweet tooth as it will have a booth at the upcoming Fiesta Hermosa during Labor Day weekend in Hermosa Beach. The cookie ice cream sandwich parlor on wheels has been serving the Hermosa Beach area since 2005, becoming a local staple. Residents and visitors will see a Chunk-n-Chip table at this year's Labor Day "fiesta." "We started out with Fiesta Hermosa five years ago, both Memorial and Labor Day, we go back every year. I really consider Hermosa our hometown with the business," Chunk-n-Chip founder Claudia Gonzalez told Patch last week. Another tradition that has emerged at Chunk-n-Chip (and will be ever-present at Fiesta Hermosa) is the "cookie challenge." …

The all-volunteer “bike corral” operation on the beach has now become a vital part of Fiesta Hermosa, our columnist says.
With gas prices at more than $4 a gallon ($1 more than they were a year ago) and finding parking in Hermosa Beach a nightmare, the free bicycle parking service offered by the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce to visitors at the recent Memorial Day weekend Fiesta Hermosa was hugely popular. Just last year, at the 2010 Memorial Day weekend Fiesta, the bike valet lot was a novel experiment in a small alleyway space. Then after the success of the larger, on-the-beach location during last fall’s Labor Day weekend Fiesta, bicyclists were counting on using it again for this year's Memorial Day weekend. Staffed by volunteer crews from Hermosa Cyclery, Beach Cities Cycling Club and the South Bay Bicycle Coalition, the bike lot operated like a newly…

Crowds gather in downtown Hermosa Beach on Memorial Day weekend for the biannual Fiesta Hermosa arts and crafts festival.
Fiesta Hermosa, one of the South Bay's most popular Memorial Day weekend events, kicked off Saturday in downtown Hermosa Beach and continued to Monday. Hundreds of artists—from painters to photographers—showcased their works to visitors in booths that lined Pier and Hermosa avenues. The sweet smell of treats and live music filled the air. Children enjoyed face painting and playing with animals in a petting zoo. The festival is held every Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend.

The biannual arts and crafts festival has something for everyone this Memorial Day weekend—here's what to expect.
Families and friends can soak up the Hermosa Beach sun while enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells of Fiesta Hermosa this Memorial Day weekend. With more than 200 artists showcasing their works, the local arts and crafts festival kicks off Saturday and will continue to Monday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. “We have something for everyone,” said Maureen Hunt, interim executive director of the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the event twice a year. “We have a Kiddie Carnival for the young kids and a petting zoo, then we have the beer garden for the younger adult crowd. We have a lot of tribute music for those that like to dance.” Each fiesta has attracted about 120-130,000 visitors to the city, according to the …
The panel also will discuss the Hermosa Beach Green Task Force, styrofoam, Fiesta Hermosa, and First Thursdays.

The council decided to extend the term of the advisory group to June, and will also discuss a recruitment process for new task force members. Council members will receive a summary of the comments community members submitted in January in connection with previously proposed increases to the city’s preferential parking permit rates, as well as discuss the regulation of parking large or recreational vehicles. Now that the council has approved the dates, the bike valet program and the shuttle bus routes, the Chamber of Commerce begins to implement the plans.
With its tasty cuisine from around the world, breathtaking artwork and convenient bike valet, Fiesta Hermosa is one of the city's most popular events and planning for them is already under way for next year. The Memorial Day Fiesta Hermosa will be May 28-31 and the Labor Day Fiesta Hermosa will be Sept. 3-5, the city has decided. "The Fiesta revenues are what enable the Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau to exist," chamber Executive Director Carla Merriman said at a City Council meeting last week. "We are totally self-funding … this way we can afford office space, staff, website, business directory for residents." In the chamber's annual city report for this year's events, revenues also allowed for $172,000 to be contributed to the …
