Daniel Thorne, 21, of Lancaster, was identified today as the swimmer who drowned when large waves pulled him into deep water at the Hermosa Beach surf line. An autopsy is pending, said an official with the coroner's office.
The victim was with two friends in waist-deep water, said Hermosa Beach police Sgt. Robert Higgins.
"Several large waves caught them and began to pull all three of them into deeper water. The victim's two friends attempted to assist the victim, but were unsuccessful," Higgins said. "The victim was last seen going under a wave and out of sight."
Searchers found the body about two hours later, Higgins said. The two friends were not hurt.
